How to Make Handmade Cards

January 24, 2019 by Pam Larmore 28 Comments

Learning how to make Handmade Cards is so rewarding. Not only is it fun, but learning how to make my own cards is also a “useful” hobby, since I like to mail cards to friends and family.

I’ve also found that making cards is good for my health.  It’s a stress reliever and a great way to relax.

Learn to Make Handmade Cards - Here is everything that you need to know about learning this wonderful hobby. There is a supply list to get you started, tips and tricks, and a simple card for you to follow.

You can make handmade cards for any occasion or event that you can dream up. You’re only limited by your imagination.  Halloween isn’t one of my favorite holidays, but there are tons of supplies for Handmade Halloween Cards.

Some crafters don’t make cards year round, but they will make their own Christmas Cards.   Handmade Valentine’s  Day Cards are also very popular.

Handmade Birthday Cards are always popular and in demand. It’s easy to find rubber stamps, papers, and sentiments for the inside of birthday greeting cards.

There are tons of supplies available for the beginning card maker. As you advance your card making skills, more complex techniques are easy to tackle.

If you’d like to get started with this rewarding hobby, I have everything you need to know to get started in this ebook.

The ebook includes:

  • Shopping List to get you started.
  • Tool List, so you know what you might want to by after you get started.
  • List of Must Have Adhesives and a few you can do with out.
  • An explanation of the different types of papers.
  • How to get started with Rubberstamping
  • 10 card sketches so you’re ready to create as soon as you get your supplies.
  • With over 80 pages of photos and instructions, this is a great deal for just $5.00.

Supplies Needed for Making Handmade Cards

Here is a list of supplies that beginners will need to make handmade cards. This is a very basic supply list. As you get more advanced, you can add more tools, and embellishments.  Embellishments is a fancy word that card makers use that means decorations.

This post contains affiliate links.  Should you purchase any of the products by clicking through links, I will receive a commission, and you’ll be helping me continue to bringing you crafty projects.

  • Cardstock – You will want to choose a good quality cardstock with some weight to it. If you use cheap cardstock, your cards will not stand up. Cardstock comes in different sizes, but 8 1/2 x 11 is the easiest size to start with. If you cut it in half, you can make two cards. (Each piece of cardstock will be 8 1/2 x 5 1/2) If you fold the two halves, they will fit into an A2 invitation size envelope.

  • Adhesive – A good quality scrapbook adhesive is important when making greeting cards.  Scrapbooking adhesives come in a variety of styles. I recommend a permanent tape runner, which is double sided adhesive tape in a dispenser.  I have tried many, but my favorites are EZ Runners by Scrapbook Adhesives.    Card Making and Scrapbooking Adhesive explains all of the different types of adhesives that you will eventually need.

  • Paper Trimmer – You will need a 12″ paper trimmer for cutting cardstock and patterned paper when making your own handmade cards. Paper trimmers have measurements so that you can easily cut mats and borders for your cards.  You may think that you are cutting straight lines with scissors, but when you get a paper trimmer, you will see a big difference.  It gives your handmade cards a professional look.

  • Sharp Scissors – I have two pairs of scissors that I use for making cards. One pair is called Cutterbees made by EK Success. They are small with a sharp tip and teflon coated blades. The teflon coating keeps adhesives from sticking to the blades. They are also very sharp all the way to the pointy tip, making them perfect for cutting into small areas. The EK Success Cutterbees are sharp enough to cut ribbon as well as paper.  The other pair of scissors that I use has a long titanium blade, and I use them for cutting larger pieces of paper.

  • The final thing that you must have to make greeting cards are decorations.  You can use rubber stamps, which can be used over and over again.  Craft Rubber Stamps are great for making cards.   They can be an investment, but they can be used for many years. The most popular rubber stamps are the ones with sayings and sentiments on them. They are available for every occasion and holiday.  Rubber stamps also come with decorative elements or pictures that can be colored with markers, pencils, or watercolors.  They can be cute like cards that I made using Wild Rose Studio or they can be modern and funky.  Ink is available in a rainbow of colors as well.  More recently, images called digis have become available online. They are very reasonably priced and can be resized to use for any size project. My favorite rubber stamp manufacturers for making my own cards are House Mouse, Penny Black, and Stampin’ Up.  Visit How To Use Rubber Stamps to learn about the different types of stamps and inks.

Tip:  Before folding card stock in half, score it for a neater fold.  A bone folder comes in handy for scoring the line and then making a crisp crease.

All of the features on this jungle card were cut out using the Cricut Electronic Cutting Machine. This is a more advanced card, but once you learn the basics, you can branch out and learn about new tools and techniques.

There are as many tools for card making as there are card designs.  Die Cutting Machines are great tools for making handmade cards. Some are very simple and use a hand crank with metal dies, and others are electronic cutting machines that cut complex shapes that you can design yourself on the computer.

Some of the machine names that you might recognize are Cricut, Cuttlebug, Sizzix Big Shot, Silhouette, and Spellbinders.

There are also a million ways you can decorate your cards. The possibilities are endless so that making my own cards is always fun and never boring.

More Advanced Card Making Supplies

After you learn the basics about making greeting cards, you will want to try all of the fun supplies and tools that will take your card making to the next level. Here is a list of supplies that you will want to explore.

    • Paper Punches – Paper Punches come in a variety of styles and for different uses. You can get punches that make fancy corners and borders. Other paper punches cut shapes for adding to your cards. My favorite punches are from Stampin’ Up, EK Success, and Martha Stewart.
    • Die Cutting Machines – Die Cutting Machines are great for all kinds of paper crafting, not just card making. They are great for scrapbooking, making bulletin boards, and decorating school projects. My favorites are the Cuttlebug, Big Shot, and the Cricut Personal Die Cutting Machine.  Making Cricut Birthday Cards is a great way to use your machine.
    • Embellishments – What are embellishments? Embellishments are anything you use to decorate your handmade cards. That includes buttons, bows, rhinestones, brads, eyelets, pearls, ribbon, twine, trim, seam binding, ruffles, metal accents, flowers, tulle, glitter sequins, buttons, and lace.
    • Advanced Markers and Coloring Mediums – There are numerous ways to color your handmade cards.  When you first start, choose colored pencils and inexpensive markers.  As you advance, you can use Copic Markers and watercolors.   Copic Markers are alcohol based and used for blending colors.

Moo-chas Gracias Cow Cricut Card Using Create A Critter

July 13, 2017 by Pam Larmore 2 Comments

Moochas Gracias for visiting my Blog today!

This cute Cricut Cow will surely make someone smile. This lonely little cow has been sitting on my work table for awhile.

Make a Cricut Cow Card using the Create A Critter Cricut Cartridge, a stamp from My Pink Stamper and some border punches.

Sometimes when I’m working on a project, I’ll cut out an extra of something in case I make a mistake or in case I need an extra.  I hate having leftover pieces parts of projects sitting everywhere, but I always end up with them on my work table.  I found a fun way to use this Cricut Cow though.

The patterned paper is from a 6×6 stack from Stampin’ Up.  I got it as a hostess gift for holding a workshop.  There are five colors in the stack, and each color has 8 different patterns.

I love being able to mix and match patterns on my cards.  It makes designing them really easy.

Paper Sizes For Cricut Cow Card:

  • Card base – White 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ (folded in half)
  • Mat – Black 5 1/4″ x 4″
  • Pink Patterned Papers – 5″ x 2″ (There are two different papers.  They overlap slightly so you can see the black mat.  Make sure you tie your ribbon around the printed card stock and mat before attaching them to your card.  This will keep you from seeing the ribbon on the inside of the card.
  • 5″ strip of black card stock.  If your punch is deeper, you might need a wider piece.  The bug border is an old punch from Martha Stewart, but I love it.  The thin scalloped punch is by Stampin’ Up.

You can see that I put pop dots under the cow to give the card more dimension.

The Moo-chas Gracias is from My Pink Stamper. The Cricut cow is from the Create A Critter Cricut Cartridge.  That cartridge has so many awesome animals on it.

Animal Kingdom Cricut Cartridge Review

May 10, 2016 by Pam Larmore Leave a Comment

No Cricut Cartridge collection is complete without the Animal Kingdom Cricut Cartridge.  I always need animals for my Cricut Projects.  They can be used for the zoo, jungle, circus, baby, camping, farm, and pet themed crafts.

The Animal Kingdom Cricut Cartridge features all kinds of animals, phrases, bookmarks, borders, and more. They are great for school projects, bulletin boards, cards, party decorations, and scrapbook pages.

Many of the Cricut Cartridges have animals, but these are more realistic than those on the other cartridges.  These aren’t quite as cartoonish and whimsical, and they are great for posters, school projects, bulletin boards, and more.

Animal Kingdom Cricut Cartridge Features

As great as the animals are on this cartridge, some awesome extras are included too.  You can cut just the animal’s head, the sound that the animal makes, borders, and a cool bookmark with the animal on it.

The animal sounds would be so sweet for a baby book.  The heads can be used on name tags or as cupcake toppers.

Kids would love decorating bookmarks to use during English Class.

Tips for Using Animal Kingdom Cricut Cartridge

  • Use the Layers feature to make your animals different colors.
  • If you are using layers, don’t cut the animals too small or some of their pieces will be TINY!
  • Use a Zig Glue Pen to attach small pieces.
  • Add details with a thin tipped pen or ink pad.
