Our First Christmas Together Tree Ornament

My daughter and son-in-law got married in May.  It was a gorgeous outside wedding at a local winery.  Her colors were a beautiful summer Malibu Blue and gray.

My friend did the flowers, and they were breath taking.  My daughter’s bouquet was fresh blue and white roses with sparkly rhinestone brooches.   She also put the brooches in the mothers’ corsages.

We saved the brooches, but I wasn’t sure what I to do with them.  My first thought was that they would be beautiful on handmade cards.

When we announced the Bling On The Holidays Blog Hop, those brooches immediately came to mind.  I wanted to create a special Christmas Ornament that Mike and Katie will be able to remember for years to come.

I wasn’t sure what type of ornament would work best with the brooches.  I was originally thinking a flat ornament that was either a wreath or tree shaped.  With the brooches being so big though, the ornament I had in mind was too big and heavy.

I was cruising through heaven…..I mean Michael’s, and spotted this wooden Christmas Ornament with flat sides.  I knew that it would work perfectly, and I would be able to add touches of silver glitter, the rhinestone brooches, and have room for their names and wedding date.

The flat sides of this wooden Christmas ornament aren’t very big.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to fit their names in a 2″ x 2 1/2″ space.

I was hoping that my Cricut Explore would cut a font that small, but the first font that I tried was too detailed.  Then I tried this font called Elegant Cake.  I still couldn’t get the whole date to cut the way I wanted, so I settled for just the year.

Christmas Ornament Instructions

  1. Paint the wooden ornament with white craft paint.  I did two layers.
  2. I used a Silver Wink of Stella pen to add shimmer to the balls on the top and bottom of the ornament.  Before this project, I had only used Wink of Stella on paper, but the tiny brush tip was perfect for for getting into that tiny spot where the ball meets the ornament.
  3. Using the Cricut Explore, I added my daughter and son-in-law’s names on one side and 2016 on the other side.
  4. I cut the rhinestone trim to size and attached it with thick tacky glue.
  5. After cutting the pin backs off of the brooches with wire cutters, I attached them with thick tacky glue.
  6. To finish the ornament, I glued the blue rhinestone trim to thin blue satin ribbon.  After it dried, I thread it through the hook and tied a knot in the end.

I love how this First Christmas Together Ornament turned out.  It’s a treasure that the new couple will cherish for years to come.
