Felt Dolls Using the Cricut Maker

January 28, 2018 by Pam Larmore 3 Comments

When I was little, my Mom always bought me paper dolls.  She said they were one of her favorite toys when she was growing up.  Fast forward to 2018, and we can make felt dolls with the Cricut Maker.

No more tracing patterns onto felt and cutting them out with scissors that I don’t want to cooperate.

At Christmas, I made Felt Christmas Stockings for silverware.  I wanted to cut more projects from felt, but I was struggling for ideas.

I had the idea of cutting felt shapes for felt boards.  Even though I don’t have littles, and I had no idea what I would do with the shapes after cutting them, I thought teachers would like them.

When I was looking through the images in Cricut Design Space, the idea struck me!  I could make felt dolls with clothes.  I had a little tin that paper flowers came in.  I thought if I put the pieces in that, a little girl could take it with her and play when she needs a quiet activity.

With the rotary blade, the Cricut Maker Machine was able to cut out tiny fingers and eyes effortlessly.  That machine is AMAZING!

Tips for Cutting Felt Dolls Using the Cricut Maker:

  • I cut my dolls and clothes at 3″.  Because of the detail, I would try cutting them any smaller.  Larger dolls will work better, but they wouldn’t have fit in my little box.
  • Choose clothes, hair, and accessories that don’t have a lot of details with slits and dashes.
  • Dense wool felt will cut better for this project than inexpensive craft felt.

Cricut Cartridges For Making Felt Dolls

Some Cricut Cartridges have too much detail for making felt dolls, but there are several that work really well for this project.

  • Paper Doll Dress Up
  • Everyday Paper Dolls
  • Create A Friend
  • Teddy Bear Parade
  • Create A Critter

With the different doll cartridges in Cricut Design Space, you can cut little kits like this for boys or girls.  They will keep them quiet and busy in church or while waiting for an appointment.
